Display Image in Latest Posts Module

I'm using the module "mod_wpmu_latest" to display the latest posts on a page in my site. I would like to display an icon image, small teaser image, in each post. This could be the first image in the post or maybe a set image that I want.

I want it to look like this site does:
http://volcom.com/


Is there a way to do this now?
Or what would you recommend?

This will take manual modification of the code.  There are some plugins that work with Wordpress that are able to do that as well.

Can you point me in the direction of these plugins, I've searched and couldn't find any.

I should add though that the plugins in question will unfortunately not likely work with WordPress MU but will likely work with WordPress for Joomla! 3.0.
