Relations of Groups to Roles to Function

I have brought your component and very excited to see all your features. Only problem how to use it. What is a relation between Groups and Roles and function.. Eg. I have a group called VirtualMart  and two roles - Author & Publisher. .. How do i give Author all access except delete, and how to i set Publisher to have access to modify and publish....
I am not seening a relation between your functions and roles.. The function is independent...
